Performs the following tests:
-screening spirometry - to evaluate presence of obstructive airway
defect or presence of COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
-chronic bronchitis, and severity ( such as mild, moderate, severe or
very severe or end-stage COPD).
-pre- and post- bronchodilator spirometry - to evaluate presence of
bronchial airway hyperactivity or hyper-responsiveness.
-lung volumes (plethysmography, or for claustrophobic patients,
the nitrogen wash-out ) - to evaluate presence of lung hyper-inflation
or restrictive lung disease, and presence of significant air-trapping.
Plethysmography provides more precise assessment of lung volumes.
-DLCO or lung diffusion capacity - helps determine lung's ability to
absorb oxygen. - helps determine severity of emphysema and
progression of interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension and
drug toxicity to the lungs.
The pulmonary function test is the gold standard in diagnosing
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and determines the
severity of COPD. This test helps establish the presence and severity of
emphysema, bronchial asthma, restrictive lung disease, and the
progression of pulmonary sarcoidosis and other interstitial lung diseases.
Methacholine Challenge Test - assists in the diagnosis or exclusion of
bronchial asthma.
